Funeral Costs Brisbane
Funeral Costs in Brisbane vary between funeral directors, so it is wise to receive quotes for the funeral service you require. Below we’ve listed the funeral services we offer in greater detail, along with the accompanying funeral costs. During the funeral arrangement, we itemise each cost, so you know exactly what you’re paying. This allows you to adjust the funeral service to suit your budget. Please call us to obtain the individual costs of each of these listed options.
On a fully conducted funeral service by Tony Hollands Funerals, WE DO NOT CHARGE EXTRA for a transfer of the deceased into our care from your home, a hospital, or a nursing facility, 24 hours a day, any day of the year. This is available in the Brisbane Metropolitan - both north and south side, Ipswich, Logan, and Beaudesert areas. This is included as a part of our professional fees.
Although these are the main areas we cover, we will help you and your family with a funeral service held anywhere we can drive to and from in one day.
We believe funeral packages can restrict your choice, so we don’t put forward an overall cost for each funeral. Rather, we personalise each funeral service based on your requirements that, adjusts the price accordingly. What you do should be
your choice.
If you’re inquiring with other funeral homes (we recommend it), it is wise to check regarding all these prices, as transfer fees alone can be as high as $600.00 We are usually middle of the range in funeral costs compared to other funeral homes. The cheaper Funeral directors often outsource their work in order to reduce overheads, while the more expensive ones are just overpriced. We believe we offer
value for money, so call us, and judge for yourself.

FAQs
If you have some questions about funeral costs in Brisbane we have tried to answer some of the most asked.
What is the average cost of a funeral (burial vs. cremation) in Brisbane, and what typically drives these costs up or down?
Answer: Funeral costs in Brisbane can vary significantly. As of late 2024/early 2025, a direct cremation (no service) might range from $2,000 – $5,000, while a cremation with a memorial service could be $5,000 – $8,000. A basic burial might start from $6,000, and a traditional, full-service burial can easily exceed $10,000 to $15,000+.
Costs are driven by:
Type of service: Cremation is generally more affordable than burial, primarily due to the high cost of burial plots.
Coffin/casket choice: This can range from a few hundred dollars for a simple eco-friendly option to well over $15,000 for a high-end casket.
Funeral director fees: These cover professional services, mortuary care, transportation, and paperwork.
Additional services: Venue hire, celebrant/clergy fees, flowers, catering, newspaper notices, embalming, and memorial items all add to the total.
Cemetery/crematorium fees: These are often separate from the funeral director's fees and can be substantial, especially for burial plots.
What is usually included in a standard funeral package in Brisbane, and what are the common "hidden" or additional fees I should be aware of?
Answer: A standard funeral package typically includes the funeral director's professional service fee (covering arrangements, transfers, essential mortuary care), a basic coffin, and assistance with necessary documentation (like the death certificate). For cremation, it often includes the cremation permit and crematorium fees.
Common "hidden" or additional fees can include:
- After-hours transfer fees.
- Cemetery plot fees (for burial).
- Opening and closing of the grave (for burial).
- Headstone or plaque costs (for burial).
- Specific celebrant or clergy fees (if not included in the package or an external one is chosen).
- Viewing fees (if not a basic viewing included).
- Embalming (often an extra cost and not always required).
- Newspaper notices/obituaries.
- Order of service booklets, memorial books.
- Floral tributes beyond a basic sheaf.
- Catering for a post-service gathering.
- Live streaming services.
- Oversize coffin fees.
Are there more affordable or "no-service" options available for funerals in Brisbane, and how do they differ in cost and offerings from traditional funerals?
Answer: Yes, direct cremation (also known as unattended or no-service cremation) is a significantly more affordable option in Brisbane.
Difference: A direct cremation involves the deceased being transferred directly to the crematorium, without a formal funeral service, viewing, or attendance by family. The ashes are then returned to the family. This drastically reduces costs associated with venue hire, celebrant fees, elaborate coffins, and many other traditional funeral elements. Our prices for direct cremation in Brisbane start from as low as $1,980. Families can then choose to hold a separate, private memorial or celebration of life at a later date, often at a much lower cost.
What payment options are available for funeral costs in Brisbane, and can funds from the deceased's estate or superannuation be used?
Answer: Most funeral homes require a deposit before the service, with the remaining balance due shortly after. Payment options typically include direct bank transfer, credit card, or payment plans offered by some funeral directors.
Using deceased's funds: Yes, funeral expenses are generally considered a priority debt of the deceased's estate. The executor of the will can often access funds from the deceased's bank account to pay for the funeral, usually with proof of death and the funeral invoice.
Superannuation: Superannuation death benefits are generally paid to nominated beneficiaries or the deceased's estate. While not automatically part of the estate, these funds can be accessed to cover funeral costs, though the process for claiming superannuation death benefits can take several weeks or months. It's advisable to contact the super fund directly to understand their specific requirements and timelines.
Is there any government assistance or support available in Brisbane to help with funeral costs for those facing financial hardship?
Answer: While Centrelink doesn't provide direct funeral payments, some support may be available.
Centrelink Bereavement Payment: If the deceased or their partner/carer was receiving certain Centrelink payments, a one-off bereavement payment may be available to the surviving partner or carer. The amount is typically equivalent to 14 weeks of the combined Centrelink payments the couple would have received.
Coroners Court of Queensland Funeral Assistance Scheme: This scheme can provide assistance for funeral costs if the deceased has no family or friends to make arrangements, or if the family is experiencing significant financial hardship. Eligibility is based on the deceased's and, in some cases, the applicant's financial circumstances. There are strict criteria, such as not having signed a contract with a funeral company already, and the deceased not having sufficient funds in their estate, superannuation, or life insurance.
Victims of Crime: If a death occurred in Queensland due to an act of violence (e.g., murder, manslaughter), the Queensland Government offers financial assistance for funeral expenses up to $15,000.
It's recommended to contact these agencies directly for the most up-to-date eligibility criteria and application processes.
