What is a Public Trustee?

• The Public Trustee has 16 offices located across Queensland and a network of over 80 outreach service centres.
  
• The Public Trustee has been serving Queensland since 1916 and is the largest provider of trustee services in the State.

• The Public Trustee is an independent statutory authority that reports to the Queensland Parliament through Queensland's Attorney-General and Minister for Industrial Relations.

Why does the community need Public/State Trustees?

• All Australian governments, whether Commonwealth, State or Territory are concerned to ensure that every Australian with legal capacity, has an up-to-date Will and Enduring Power of Attorney.
  
• Governments are also concerned to ensure that all Australians have access to financial management services in the event they lose capacity and do not have an Enduring Power of Attorney.
  
• It is also important that everyone in our community has access to affordable estate and trust administration services.
  
• The first Office of Public Trustee was originally created to tackle a combination of the dangers and conditions of early colonial life, including high mortality, low literacy and travel and communication difficulties that made it difficult to find suitably qualified, trustworthy volunteers with financial expertise to manage trust funds for minors. Australia's first Public Trustee was established in South Australia in 1881.
